My first real vacation…to Hawaii

I’m almost 41 years old and, if you remember, I planned to retire by 41. Haha, it hasn’t worked out like that, although I’m happy to report that I am getting rich. Just a bit more slowly than I originally hoped. The new retirement age is 50, which isn’t so bad. Anyway, that’s not what I’m here to say. I’m just here to say to you that I finally get to take a “real” vacation. One that doesn’t put a person in debt. It’s been saved for, planned, and I couldn’t be more excited.
Hawaii
My girlfriend and I will be traveling to Oahu for a week. It’s the third-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, the most populated, and is known for iconic beaches, dining and nightlife. I’m not as much interested in the nightlife as she is, but I’m still looking forward to new experiences. We’ll be staying at the Moana Surfrider resort on Waikiki Beach which, from what I can tell, will be a pretty swanky experience.
Hawaii was never on my “must see” list of places to go, but as a first vacation it seemed like a good choice. Hiking and relaxing on the beach will be my favorite things, while exploring the city and nightlife will be my girlfriend’s. We even got one of those beach tent things. We got the WolfWise 3 person portable beach tent mostly for the UPF 50+ protection against the sun (cause we’re both super freaking white).
From what I understand, Hawaiians like SPAM and eat it regularly. I find that a bit hard to believe since growing up as an impoverished child, SPAM was one of those items that came stock in the boxes from the food pantry. I remember it tasting like the smell of wet dogfood. I’m not saying I won’t try the local cuisine, even if it smells that way, just that I’ll be surprised if I taste SPAM again and enjoy it even a little bit, lol.
We plan to go snorkeling too. I only remember using a snorkel in the public pool, but this time I got the real deal snorkeling set from Cressi. It’s the Cressi Adult Snorkeling Set from Amazon. Maybe that’s overkill…time will tell, lol. After comparing the cost of renting that kind of ger for a week, it seemed like I might as well just buy it and have it the next time I decide to snorkel somewhere (which I’m hoping will happen again someday).
I don’t have much else to say about Hawaii, but I’ll be happy to report back after our trip. To close, I’ll just say that I never dreamed I would be in a position to take vacations. It always seemed like “rich people stuff” and that I’d never have the opportunity. I hope all of you reach that point, if you haven’t already. I wish you the very best!
